Home School Science Projects: Ice Cream and Pop Corn

I love teaching science for our home school co-op. Especially when food is involved. Cooking is always a great science lesson.Today we made home made peach ice cream. I taught about where milk come from and how you can take a liquid, lower the freezing point of ice, and make a solid. For lesson two, I explained "why pop corn pops." The kids loved eating the ice cream but I think there favorite demonstration was the pop corn. Maybe because it was loud. Here are some pics of our lesson today. Oh and on a side note, home made ice cream is way better than store bought!

I had the kids make ice cream in a bag so they could see and feel the changes. It came out surprisingly good.

All the kids took turns mixing up the ingredients. Here they are stirring in fresh pureed peaches for the peach ice cream.

Letting them see the vanilla ice cream we made in the bag.

For our next topic, we talked about "why pop corn pops."

They loved the popping sound. And I guess my little girl decided dressing like a dragon was best for making pop corn and ice cream. Hey why not. :)

Everyone enjoying science!
